Elaine Williams (former member of HPBC, current music minister at Broadridge Baptist, LHS English teacher, and the mother of two of my closest friends--Debra and Denise) has been diagnosed with a rare blood/bone cancer (Multiple Myeloma). She received the diagnosis two weeks ago. The disease eats away at the bone marrow and is very painful. She is just beginning chemo in the form of a pill. The pill isn't supposed to make her sick or cause her to lose her hair which is all good. After a month or so she will go undergo a couple of months of intense chemo (the regular way, not the pill) then finally she will go to Chapel Hill for a stem cell transplant in hopes the new cells will make more bone marrow. Treatment will take several months, but because the cancer was caught in time, it looks like her chances of recovery are good. If it doesn't work she will start all over, since this course of action is the only treatment for this cancer. She went to the doctor in November thinking she had a pulled muscle. In reality, the pain was coming from a cracked rib due to the cancer's break down of the bone. Debra believes that pain in her mom's side was a gift from God. Without it, the cancer may have been found too late. Please keep Ms. Elaine and her family in your prayers over the next few months. Thanks.
